About
Containers for Change
Containers for Change is a recycling program in the state of Queensland, Australia, that offers cash refunds for eligible containers returned for recycling. The program is designed to encourage residents to recycle and reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
Under the Containers for Change program, residents can return eligible containers, such as aluminum cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers, to designated recycling centers in exchange for a refund of 10 cents per container. The containers must be clean and free of any contaminants, such as food or liquids, in order to be eligible for the refund.
The program is administered by the Queensland government and aims to increase recycling rates and reduce litter in the state. The containers that are collected through the program are sent to recycling facilities to be processed into new products or materials.
Containers for Change has been successful in increasing recycling rates in Queensland, and has been credited with reducing litter and creating jobs in the recycling industry. The program has also been adopted by other states in Australia, such as New South Wales and Western Australia, as a way to improve their recycling efforts.
Strong Street Recyclers
Baringa is growing suburb on the Sunshine Coast and is part of Aura the Stockland development. One of the standout sustainability initiatives in Queensland is the Containers for Change (‘Coex’) program. The program was initiated in response to the increasing amount of waste generated and the need for a more sustainable solution to manage this waste.
This state wide program has seen over 5 billion containers since the inception of the program in November 2018, recycled and avoided the risk of getting into landfill. By reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill, the program has helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve natural resources.
Part of the profit generated through this program is mandated to be invested in the local community. Furthermore, charities can register and set up Scheme ID’s that the community could then donate their containers towards.
The program accepts a wide range of recyclable materials and is constantly looking at expanding the acceptable materials. Most recently Coex is seeking public consultation on the acceptance of wine and spirit bottles.
Coex issues a licence to operators within a specific catchment area. Strong Street Recyclers has successfully won the licence for the following catchments:
1. Baringa
2. Little Mountain
3. Aroona
4. Pelican Waters
5. Bells Creek, and
6. Golden Beach.
Strong Street Recyclers has a container refund point (‘CRP’) or depot situated in the Aura Business Park at 15 Strong Street, Baringa Q 4551. The depot is under 10mins from each of the 6 suburbs in the catchment.
The depot is a purpose built facility that allows customers to reverse back up to a machine to sought their containers. There are two dedicated parking spots for each machine, allowing a person to sort and the other to get ready. There is Cash Redemption Terminal for customers to redeem cash.
Strong Street Recyclers is open 7 days a week except public holidays.
